Can't remove contact from smart lists on new Mac

My new M4 using Sequoia 15.6.1 won't allow me to delete contacts from a smart list. Evidently, I can no longer just click on the contact and hit delete. I saw somewhere that it said to go to edit and click on edit smart list, but that is greyed out. Can anybody help?

I can't believe I just spent all this money on the latest machine and I have to deal with something that used to be so simple.

When I click on a contact in a smart list and hit delete, Contacts asks me if I want to delete the contact. The options are to delete it from the whole database or to leave it alone.

Frankly, I was surprised to hear that deleting an entry from a smart list ever worked in Contacts. I use a third-party contact manager these days, so I rarely launch Apple's Contacts application at all, but Apple's Photos application has Smart Albums where the "smart" part means they are strict logical queries against the library, constantly tracking the contents of the library as viewed through the "smart" criteria. The only ways to remove a photo from a Smart Album is to change the criteria to exclude it or to remove it from the library.
