Mac using OS-X El Capitan won’t boot up.
When I run first aid I get a message that says “problems were found with the partition map which might prevent booting”. How do I repair the “problems”?

You can only repair the partition map by ensuring you have a Time Machine backup, then wiping the drive with Disk Utility, and finally restoring the drive by booting into Recovery and choosing Restore from Time Machine backup. That will repave the drive with normal partition map and the contents of the Mac prior to wiping the drive.
Thank you for the very useful information. I have already replaced the outdated Mac with the newest model and will indeed be backing everything up on Time Machine this time! The mess was caused by not following the proper protocol to shut down. Lesson learned!
