Screen Time does not track time spent while on lock screen

I have set up my iPad so my kids have Screen Time time limits for apps like Spotify. But Screen Time doesn’t seem to track the time spent on Spotify if Spotify is started then the screen is locked. Why not?

I could restrict all app access when the screen is locked by that’s not the point. I want to give my kids an hour a day and having the screen locked should mean they can me messing with anything else at the same time.

Screen Time (on Apple devices) accurately tracks device usage, including the time spent with the screen on, regardless of whether it's on the lock screen or actively viewing an app, as it measures overall device interaction rather than just the display content. If Screen Time isn't tracking properly, it could be a software issue that may be resolved by restarting your device, ensuring it's updated, or checking your iCloud and Family Sharing settings.
