Display Will Not Wake from Sleep
I'm experiencing a persistent issue with my 2 external monitors not waking from sleep, and I've noticed this is not an isolated incident. It's surprising that with so many reports of similar problems across various online platforms, there's still no clear solution or software update to address this.
Detailed Problem Description
The problem occurs under various conditions and is independent of the specific Mac or connections used.
- Various Mac Models: I have experienced the issue with both my Mac Studio M2 Ultra and a MacBook Pro (16", 2017). This rules out a model-specific hardware problem.
- Monitors: 2x PHILIPS BRILLIANCE 272B, one connected from thunderbolt to DP and one from Thunderbolt to miniDP and HDMI (because of the issue to swith the input when problem occurs)
- Different Cables: Both official Apple Thunderbolt cables and cables from other brands have been tested, without any resolution.
- Operating System: The issue is present on the latest version of macOS, Sequoia 15.5.
Current Workarounds and Temporary Solutions
The only ways to get the screen to work again are by taking one of the following impractical steps:
- Completely restarting the Mac.
- Unplugging and replugging the Thunderbolt to MiniDP.
- Switching to another input, such as HDMI, if available.
These actions are a significant interruption to my workflow and make daily use of the Studio Display very frustrating.
Scope of the Problem
This is clearly not an isolated incident. I have consulted various forums and communities online, and it appears that hundreds, if not thousands, of users worldwide are struggling with this specific issue. Here's a look at similar reports I have found on the Apple Support Community and other platforms:
- On the official Apple Community, there are at least 300 posts and more than 1,000 "I have this question too" reactions on this topic.
- A popular Reddit thread on this issue has over 200 comments from users with similar situations.
- Reports date back a while, showing that this is a persistent problem that has deserved Apple's attention for a long time.
- One user reported repeated failures to wake the Studio Display even after Apple replaced parts like the logic board and Thunderbolt ports — the issue persisted (Apple Community).
- Another user said their Studio Display stays black after sleep on macOS Sequoia, only working again after hours disconnected from power (Apple Community).
- Some users tried disabling Mac sleep altogether and only letting the display turn off — it reduces but does not eliminate the issue (Apple Community).
- Apple support has advised unplugging both power and Thunderbolt cables and reconnecting them, which only provides a temporary fix (Apple Community).
Given the volume of reports, it appears this is a widespread software problem in macOS rather than a hardware issue. We would greatly appreciate it if Apple would take this seriously and initiate a thorough investigation to develop a bug fix.
