Messages in Apple Mail Won't Delete

After reading a mail message and then deleting it, it simply stays in the inbox. Or at least its headline stays in the inbox, because if I then try to reopen the message, nothing happens. If I shut down Mail and then relaunch it, the deleted messages are no longer there (in the inbox). Anyone else have this problem please?
