Randomly disappearing downloaded songs in Apple Music on iPhone 15 Pro

I download a song and add it to a playlist in Apple Music. Next I go offline and click on Library, Downloaded. But after few days that I have downloaded some song, these randomly disappeared from the downloaded. iPhone 15Pro. iOS 18.6. Why some songs are removed randomly?

RESOLVED.

In Settings > Apps > Music > Optimise Storage > 64 GB (instead of None).

Previously, I had set the Optimise Storage setting in Settings > Apps > Music > to None. However, it seemed that Settings was removing songs to reduce the Optimise Storage usage to less than 2GB. By setting it to 64 GB, I’ve ensured that the songs remain in the Download Library.

Re: "Music removes downloads : Why some songs are removed randomly?"

One possibility that comes to mind:

Files that can easily be re-downloaded may be removed if there is not enough storage space free for them:

You may want to check whether your iPhone is low on memory / storage space to keep files on the iPhone.

Eg: An iPhone generally needs around 8 Gb free in order to operate smoothly and do all you ask it to do.

(NB: Any iCloud storage space you may have doesn't count: iPhone storage is separate.)

Wondering if your iPhone's iOS version is up-to-date, as keeping the software up-to-date often side-steps issues. (Some of the recent updates have included "bug-fixes")

If your iPhone is not set to automatically download iOS updates, you can check in Settings > General > Software updates to see if there is an update waiting to be installed: NB: If so, and you choose to update, it is always wise to back-up your iPhone first.

Apple supports online article: About iOS 18 Updates - Apple Support says iOS 18.6.2 is the latest iOS version ... and "This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users".

Thank you for reminding me you are using 18.6.2 ... good that your software is up-to-date.

When updating the iOS, seems an iPhone can require extra memory / storage space during the process. If that occurs, and iPhone is short on space, files that can easily be replaced may be removed. If you made a back-up before the update, as Apple suggests, you may have back-up copies of the missing downloaded songs.

You may want to check whether the missing downloaded songs are just not viewable at the momnt.

You could check: Settings > Music >

If "Show Apple Music" is not on then toggle it on.

If "Show Apple Music" is on, try toggling it off and back on again.

or,

If you haven't already: in the Music app: In the Library:

try checking Playlists, Albums, Songs, TV & Movies, or Music Videos

to see if the missing songs have been sorted into categories.

You can control the sorting of sings: Eg: Play music on iPhone - Apple Support says:

"Sort your music

  1. Go to the Music app  on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Library, then tap Playlists, Albums, Songs, TV & Movies, or Music Videos.
  3. Tap , then choose a sorting method, such as Title, Artist, Date Added, or Release Date."

You may be able to check on what your "Recently Played" in the Queue ?

Re: I have around 48 GB of free space, I don't think is related to space.

OK. Thank you for checking, and replying :-)

Wondering if the disappearing songs are purchases or not.

(You can re-download purchases):

Seems Music app is not a back-up service:

Any digital media you buy from Apple can be permanently downloaded on to an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows PC.

About purchasing movies, TV shows, music, books, and ringtones from Apple - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"You can permanently download purchased content to your iPhone, iPad, Mac or Windows PC. Once downloaded, you can access content without an internet connection, and Apple can’t remove it from your device".

Purchased? Not sure about that. This problem is with Apple Music not iTunes. You can’t permanently download files from Apple Music. You can download files, on the phone, and this being the problem in question, as why once I downloaded some of the songs, these disappear, not all of them, but some, randomly.

We get there, yes to your question.

So I download a song after clicking on the 3 dots.

Then I navigate to Library > Downloaded > Songs.

There should be there at least 30 songs but I only have 14. So 16 songs have been removed and I don't know how and why.

So I have to redownload them (if I could only remember these songs!).

As you probably know the song in Library > Playlist (and so on categories) are played using data.

While the songs in Library > Downloaded > Playlist (and so on categories) are files resident on the phone. These are the one that are disappearing.

But I don't see the option that you describing 'Recently Added Playlist', not sure where that is or I can find it on the app?

Hello,

none of the above seems to help.

also I don’t have Show Apple Music, in the a music app.

The library is not available, nor manageable in Settings > Music app.

I have checked the iPhone storage. Settings > General > iPhone Storage > and all the songs available here are the one remaining. Even here not all the songs I have downloaded are present.

Just to recap, songs I have downloaded in Apple Music aren’t showing and I need to redownload them again and again.
