Purpose of upside-down 'e' symbol in Apple Messages keyboard

when using apple message keyboard, there is, in the bottom row a symble/button that resembles an upside down, lowe case, cursive e. when pressed an empty "text block" opens. what is it for? My original question was as specific as I know how to be. I can not be more clear.

I got it!

It's for writing with your finger or drawing pictures, etc. I'll have to think about using this!
