Fixing 'A software update is required to use this startup disk' error during macOS reinstallation
Hey everyone,
I could really use some help. I've tried everything I can think of — booting from USB, connecting directly to the router via Ethernet cable, and more — but I'm still stuck.
The issue is with a MacBook A1989. Every time I start it, it goes straight into Internet Recovery. When I proceed, I get the error: “A software update is required to use this startup disk.” If I click "Yes," it tries to update, restarts, and then shows the exact same message again — stuck in a loop. And its still connected with the Ethernet cable the whole time-
I tried using Command + R to access Disk Utility, but that didn’t work, so I found a workaround and managed to reinstall macOS. I even erased the entire internal disk beforehand. Still, the same error appears once the installation is complete.
I also tried installing macOS onto an external SSD and a bootable USB drive — no luck there either.
I’ve recorded a video of the full process (with the loading parts cut out), which I can share.
So my question is: Does anyone know how to fix the “A software update is required to use this startup disk” error, or how to get this MacBook running again?
Thanks in advance!
