How to prevent Maps app from sleeping while driving?

One would think the good old user experience geniuses would've solved this one, ten years in, but it sure would be nice if a native app was smart enough not to go to sleep while being used! Awfully fun scrambling to enter my password while driving because the phone went dark at a crucial moment.

This happens whether plugged in or not. Anybody have a fix?

iOS devices are designed to stay awake and prevent the screen from going to sleep whenever Apple Maps or Google Maps is actively being used for navigation or turn-by-turn directions. This ensures that you can continuously see the route, upcoming turns, and traffic updates without the display dimming or locking automatically. Once navigation is ended or paused, the device will return to its normal auto-lock and sleep settings.

This may be a dumb question, but you are actively navigating in the app when this happens, right?

I've never had this happen when navigating with Apple Maps unless I locked the phone manually. Even then, it wakes whenever directions are given.

It's been a while, though. Haven't navigated that way since iOS 15. Bought a car with CarPlay before iOS 16 was released.
