Which older Mac can I upgrade to?

Recently bought a new Mac Air. The software is so unusable that Apple probably won't have fixes for a year or two. Had to return it for a refund. In the meantime, what older Macs can I upgrade to which are fully patched and reliable yet still supported for a few more years?

Suggestions?

"Fully debugged" software doesn't exist, but MacOS Sonoma, 14.7.x is probably the closest you can get from Apple. It is stable and receiving security updates only at this point, will run on any Mac released between Late 2017 and Mid 2024 (Late 2020 to Mid 2024 with 16GB RAM recommended). It is only scheduled to receive one more year of security updates, but by then 15.8 should be finalized and as close to fully debugged as one could expect.

If for some reason you need legacy 32-bit applications from 9+ years ago you will instead need to run 10.12-10.14 on a 2010-2018 Mac. However those old operating systems are now considered obsolete, do not support any current mainstream web browser, and may have trouble interacting with the modern web pages. If you need both an old computer for legacy software and a new computer for the modern internet you might need two computers.

Interesting. I have two Macs and there are four more used by other family members in the house, all running the latest macOS and all working flawlessly. So it appears the problem is not with macOS.

But it sounds like you'd be better off switching to Windows, which is well known for its perfect stability, reliability and security. Good luck with that.

Windows… never. I spent 30 years fixing Billy Bob’s self destructing operating systems. I had 3 computers self destruct in a month and each took two days to restore for each computer. He’s had enough free labour from me. No more. Besides, Windows has problems using Zoom that are well known in my circle of friends.

It is a problem with Mac OS. Apple support has said so. 300,000 people are having the same issues I’ve had with Music app making things disappear or refusing to add album artwork. They have no solution for the latest iMovie bug which won’t allow saving of some projects. They have no solution for why the computer becomes unresponsive for several seconds to a minute on the latest OS with 2 finger swiping in the app launcher) and all this is happening in a brand new Mac Air M4.

You are mistaken in assuming I use the Mac to donthe same things you do. I need a reliable computer not excuses.

See that “donthe” above? Spell check can’t fix it. Wasn’t planning on that happening but there it is.

I’ve been a long term Apple supporter until I bought a new Mac Air.

thanks for your comment. Oh I guess spell check forgot to capitalize the first word.

When using a Mac compatible cd/dvd drive, Os 15.5&15.6 won’t play from a cd using Music that was imported but Quicktime will… one song at a time though. Play function doesn’t exist. Computer just ignores play function. Not a hardware issue. Its a software issue. Music app often refuses to add album artwork or makes stuff disappear even though the music is still on the computer.

iMovie constantly crashes when trying to export some projects but not others. Data files were damaged and repaired but still doesn’t work. You can’t just export into photos anymore unlike older OS.

Software is just not ready and needs further development. Needs more fixing and I’m not waiting another year or two for that to hapoen before I can use the computer for the purpose I bought it for.

The computer becomes non responsive at random times so I can’t use it for Zoom calls. Last time I tried to share on Zoom, it locked up for 10 seconds when clicking to start a video. Then it clicked ten times and screwed up the share. Not usable for professional presentations online.

Software is very limited. Often can’t get apps on OS15 that are available on older computers. Support app doesn’t exist for 15.5.

I’ve spent two months with Apple support and no fixes even after uograding to 15.6. Same bugs. (Spell checker didnt fix that typo).

Look at the upgrade notes for 15.6 to fix many denial of service issues. Many more still remain.

My time is valuable. Spending two months fixing a new computer is beyond reasonable.

I’ve already spent an hour teplying to some posts on here and two months trying to resolve the problems with Apple Support. That’s enough free labour for today.

sorry for thentypos but spell checker isn’t working that well.

Some days I spend 10 hours on Zoom meetings, and I'm often the one sharing slides. Been doing that on macOS since 2020.

We get it, complaining is easier than troubleshooting. As for spellchecking, I wonder what happens when I try mistyping the word uograding

So macOS is broken, including spellchecking? Good luck with your issue.

Troubleshooting is more painful than complaining after 2 months. Done all the troubleshooting and maybe in a year or so there will be fixes but there’s no guarantees either.

i think my best bet is to buy an older mac that is still recent enough that I’m able to use it. So which OS is better debugged and more reliable?

i have a 2012 Mac Air which doesn’t have the software issues of OS 15 but Apple has started turning off many of the features in icloud. So I need something more recent to use and am looking at refurbished computers. Its either that or abandon Apple. Any help would be appreciated on what Mac would be suitable. Reliability is more important.

Which older Mac can I upgrade to?
