…Do you have “Optimize Storage” checked in Photos’ Settings

Have you tried a forced restart?

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

This is different from a simple Power Off. I had to continue holding the button down past the "slide to power off" message, and then I released the button only after  the Apple Logo appeared indicating a re-start.

Have you already installed the 18.6.1 update from August 14? If not, try that and check, if the problem persists.

If only the Photos.app is crashing, the problem might be caused by a damaged or incompatible image file in your Photos Library or a damaged library. In that case it might help to erase the local copy of your Photos Library on the iPhone and rebuild it by downloading a new version from iCloud Photos. However, this is an expensive fix. You may have to name some faces again, as not all named faces are syncing with iCloud.

But before you do that, you have to be absolutely sure that all photos and videos are in iCloud. You did not answer Richard's questions regarding the state of your iCloud syncing. If you consider to rebuild your Photos Library from iCloud, check this and please tell us, what you find:

  • What is the status of the iCloud syncing on the iPhone? In Photos, tap your avatar in the upper right corner of the screen. Does it say "Synced just now" or something else? If it still says "uploading" your photos are not yet all in iCloud and you have to wait.
  • Can you see all your photos in iCloud on your iCloud web page at www.icloud.com in the Photos.app there?

If you are sure, that all photos are in iCloud Photos, you can download a fresh copy of your Photos Library like this:

  • Make a current iCloud backup of your iPhone, just in case something should go wrong. The iCloud backup does not include the media files, only the structure of the library, so you will have to take care not delete any items from iCloud.
  • Turn off iCloud Photos only on your iPhone, just on one device, as described here: How to turn off iCloud Photos - Apple Support
  • Open Photos again and check, that it is no longer syncing with iCloud. Delete all photos in small batches, no more than 1000 at a time. Empty Recently Deleted frequently, so it does not get too full. Keep your iCloud webpage www.icloud.com open on a different device, so you can see immediately, if any deletion is syncing to iCloud. Don#t empty recently Deleted, if the deletions are syncing to iCloud. and check the iCloud Settings on your iPhone.
  • Once the local copy of the library on your iPhone is empty, quit photos and restart the iPhone, to force Photos to save this state. Then turn on iCloud Photos again in the Settings and wait for the photos and the albums to come back from iCloud. This can take several days, even with a a fast Wi-Fi. But you will have anew, pristine Photos Library on your iPhone.

Can you give us some more information?

  • Are you using iCloud Photos to synchronize your devices? If so
  • …Do you have “Optimize Storage” checked in Photos’ Settings
  • …Do you see all your iPhone pictures at iCloud.com?
  • …Do you see all your Mac pictures at iCloud.com?
  • …Do you have more than 10% free storage on your iCloud account?
  • What is your storage on this iPhone? At Settings>General>iPhone Storage, my phone says "50.5 GB of 128 GB used." What does yours say? Do you have more than 10% free storage on your iPhone?
  • Has this problem always existed, or did it just start? Can you think of anything that changed that might affect your device?

CarolAird wrote: Yes optimize storage is checked and I have done a force quit. I have also seen in person the genius for photos at the Apple Store and he doesn’t know why either. I filled out a “concern” too.

Oh. So I guess you weren't actually asking for help from us, or you would have let people know what you've tried before. I wish we'd known.

The problem never existed before the 18 update.

That is not so surprising, as there has not been any clean-up tool on the iPhone in Photos before iOS 18 came out. It is a new feature, provided by Apple Intelligence, perhaps still work in progress. It is so new, that it is not even described yet in the iPhone user guide how to use the clean-up tool: Edit photos and videos on iPhone - Apple Support

Clean-up is working on my iPhone iPhone 15 Pro Max without crashes. Are you using any features on your iPhone 16 that are not available on the iPhone 15 pro Max, perhaps the photographic styles? Or the advanced camera controls?

Trying to edit portraits with clean-up is very tricky on the iPhone. It is hopeless to try to remove freckles or similar, because we have to zoom in, but when I try to zoom in on a spot and to center the view around this place I have to touch the display, and the area gets pixellated as soon as I touch the screen. It is much easier to do in Photos for Mac, because on the Mac I can zoom in and shift the enlarged photo independent of the clean-up brush.

Ahh-- maybe that's what I haven't been noticing!. I just tried it on my 16, and I can zoom without pixelation. But I can't slide the picture over. The same thing happens on a Mac in LightRoom with using Masks, and I find it frustrating to have to back out, move, and then get back in.

léonie wrote: That's interesting, Richard, that the same is happening in LightRoom. I am not using LightRoom; I have not seen this in other apps.

I see that I was way unclear! What I was referring to wasn't the pixilation, but rather not being able to move the zoomed image without changing modes. To use Masks I have to zoom in, but then I can't move the area without zooming out. It could also be that I have not figured out which combination of thumb and finger pressing I'm supposed to use…

Thank you Leonie. I am terrified to do your Library thing. I’m not clever enough with these things and I would be very nervous I would lose the lot. I have 512 storage on the phone (16 Pro) and my photos take up very little space. They are all in the cloud. I am hoping Apple removes the safety filter. I cannot clean-up my client’s photos properly. I have flagged this and the crashing in Apple concerns.
