How to erase an older MacBook completely to give away to a friend

I have a friend who only uses an iPad, but uses Android phones. I have an older 2012 version of a MacBook, that I would like to give them, but I need to erase everything and leave it in a condition with a clean, albeit older version iOS. How?

It's a Mid 2012, 2.5 Ghz Dual Core Intel Core I5.

I have an external laser CD/DVD device I can use for the backup disk.

Current iOS is Catalina.

I know this will have limitation as to how powerful some of the actions will be, but mainly I want them to get some idea of how well apple devise work with each other, and to give them a chance to become acquainted with the cursor control and screen gestures .

Are there any steps that could affect my other devices, my new MacBook, iPad, cell phones, etc, if I make a mistake? For example, sometimes I try to do something with my music and end up messing things up with my other devices. At what point would the old MacBook be cutoff from affecting the other devices so I can feel comfortable. Thanks for your reply, btw!

Make sure you do a backup if you have not already transferred content.

You only "lose" things from iCloud if you delete them on a device while signed into iCloud on the device. iCloud works on the basis of what you do one one device is reflected in everything else connected to iCloud as well as whatever is stored on tie iCloud account at that time. Sign out of iCloud on the device and that basically cuts the connection between the device and iCloud. After that you could delete them individually and nothing would happen to them in iCloud, but there isn't any point in doing that if you are doing an entire reset of the device. Just pay attention to all the steps in the article I provided.

If you ever created a firmware password on that Mac, be sure to turn it off before giving the Mac to your friend. This password is not set by default, but if you did set one, you wouldn't want to leave that as a "ticking time bomb" for a friend to discover "the hard way."

Set a firmware password on your Mac - Apple Support

"When you set a firmware password on your Intel-based Mac, users who don't have the password can't start up from macOS Recovery or any disk other than the designated startup disk."

I got it done, after making a mistake and using Apple Support to talk me through it. When I got to the disk utility, there were three check boxes. One for the SSD, one for the Data, and the one that confused me that was labeled something about base MacBook OS. I thought the third one was the one I wanted to keep and erased the first two.

After that it was totally clean. The tech talked me through repairing the boot portion of the SSD, which then allowed me to get the OS downloaded. I now have a clean MacBook to give to my friend. Thanks for the help everybody. I downloaded the chat for future reference, if I ever need to do it again.
