Time Machine snapshots persist even though backups are current

(I've really never been comfortable with my understanding of Time Machine snapshots, and stuff like this doesn't help.)

Disk Utility tells me there are two multi-GB snapshots on my boot drive -- one from 8/12, and one from yesterday (8/13) at 8:52 PM.

Time Machine tells me it's current and up to date with its backups, with the latest having happened yesterday at 9:39 PM.

Why hasn't the system purged these snapshots, or at least the older one (given that the other *might* have overlapped the backup start time)?

(Strange that there's no Time Machine, Storage, or Utilities tags in Discussions!)

I think that may be normal. My Mac has 25 snapshots visible in Disk Utility and the most recent Time Machine backup was just moments ago.
