Mac Mini M4 Sequoia 15.6 Printing Problem

I believe Mac OS 15.6 updated on my Mac Mini M4 on Monday, 11 August. When I went to print a document the default printer HP Laserjet 1320N shows in the print menu (I also have the printer icon displayed in the toolbar). When I select print I see the Icon in the toolbar jump, but no printing occurs. If I open the toolbar icon to watch the print queue and print the document, the job begins to show progression for maybe 1/2 second then the progress bar disappears. My Wife’s new M4 iMac (same software version 15.6) prints fine. I can see the printer and all consumables from the tool bar icon and even access the printer’s information, but it will not print.

I reset the print driver and setup a new printer with same results. I even went so far as to reload system files from a previous Time Machine back up from a week ago with no change. All was woking fine last week with the only known change being an update to Mac OS 15.6…. Any thoughts?

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Good morning Old Toad, I restarted in safe mode with no change in printing failure. When I setup my Mac Mini M4 last fall, I moved my home folder to an external SSD and printing has functioned perfectly until this week. When I moved the home folder to the external SSD, I created another administrator account on the internal SSD to provide another option for accessing and controlling the computer. When Logged into this other administrator account, I get the same printing failure. Still looking for a solution? Thank you!

Interesting you should bring that up. I have been running Surshark VPN for several years, but relatively recently they have included an anti-virus feature to the app and I did start having some other annoyances in my system so I (or so I thought) after activating it. I have since had deactivated it. I also started having anomalies with the pathway to my external Home Folder where the OS wants to add a number in the pathway to my external drive. May or may not be related, but I think I will start by reloading from Time Machine from a period before I added the anti-virus and see what happens. Worst case is I will have to do a clean install and I’m trying to avoid that. Thank you for your help! I will update this forum with my results…

First, there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This documents describe what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community and Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

Unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer's, school's or bank's servers, they provide false security from a privacy standpoint.  Read these two articles: Public VPN's are anything but private and Security Risks: The Dangers of Using Free VPNs (eccu.edu).

Additionally, a new study ("Apple Offers Apps With Ties to Chinese Military”) is specifically about VPN apps in Apple’s App Store.

Just some food for thought.

Good Morning Old Toad, an update on my printing issue. I reinstalled the system software from the options menu (not from Time Machine) and the problem went away. My assumption is something, ether from the latest OS update or perhaps from some other glitch in the system. Regardless, The computer is printing properly without issues. I may never know what the original cause was, but I thank you for your assistance and advice!
