How do i remove an email from the priority list in apple mail on a mac once I have read the email?

I see the "Priority List" at the top of my email inbox in the Mail app on my Mac.

I read one of the unread emails in my Priority List.

One would then expect that email to no longer appear in the Priority List now that I have read it, correct?

Yet, it is still there. And it appears that the only way to "remove" it from the PL is to delete it?

What if I don't want to delete the email?

By definition, if it is important, I probably want to keep a record of having received it, correct?

Is there another way to "remove" an email from my priority list?

I've searched online and only found instructions on how to remove the entire list by turning the Priority List feature off.

It seems useful and I would to use to use the feature but not if I have to delete a message to remove it from the list.

To make matters worse, when I delete an email from the PL, the app scrolls down to where the original email was located in my inbox and I have to scroll all the way back up to work on the emails in the PL. That makes the delete option even more annoying.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! I'm sure I've just missed the option to resolve this issue but I can't find any answer in the mail app or online.

Thank you!
