Hi there- when you say the apps are open, do you mean the app window itself is open or is the icon just showing up in the dock? Either way, it should be a quick change in either the "General" tab or "Desktop & Dock" tab in your System Settings.

Two comments regarding Malware

Point One

The suggestion ( @ BDAqua ) to use the Etrecheck application is both good and may detect Malware

Malware getting onto the computer does not happen all by itself

It would require the User ( You ) to have either unwittingly downloaded the payload or purposefully have downloaded the software .

Then, to have given expressed consent ( Computer Password ) to allow the payload to commence the installation.
