Compatibility of Sandisk G-Drive ArmorATD with early 2015 MacBook Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max

The MacBook Pro is an early 2015 model running Yosemite. I also would like to use the sandisk G-drive to back up iPhone -16 pro max.

is there another external hard drive that would be better suited?

OWC Envoy Pro mini should work (it is a real SLC SSD, not a lower quality "thumb drive"). It has USB-A/C connectors and works in a Mac mini 2018 and iPad Air 10,9" (5th Generation, M1) powered via them. Notice that Yosemite does not support APFS (you need High Sierra or later for that) so you must format at least some volume as MacOS Extended, GUID for it.
