Removing husband's registration and becoming the owner on a new MacBook

My old laptop was registered to my husband - I just moved everything over to my new one before I realized that. How to I make myself the registered owner and remove him?

I would suggest performing the following steps if you have the account information & passwords necessary:

Just make sure you have any personal information from your husband's account transferred to another location and you can access that data using your own Mac before you do anything else to erase & reset your husband's laptop.

The Mac itself isn’t registered to an owner. If you are the admin, the only user, and logged into your Apple Account on the Mac then you are the ‘owner’. Similarly, the standard warranty is tied to the serial number of the Mac, not the buyer.

AppleCare+ (extended warranty) is different. That can be transferred, but it needs to be done by the purchaser of the plan, not the recipient.

Here is how to transfer ownership:

Mac does support Activation Lock and that is tied to an Apple Account, and app purchases and updates are tied to an Apple Account, so following the procedure gets the entire system cleared of the previous owner, and configured for the new owner.

Swapping accounts is popular, but tends to run into issues with the ownership of apps and tools.
