iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014 will a Magic Trackpad 3 work with it?

I haven't used this machine since around 2017, according to AI: this late 2014 iMac's officially supported macOS versions are macOS Yosemite (10.10) through macOS Big Sur (11.x) but no later.

I tried speaking to an apple store employee, he was friendly, but unhelpful, kept trying to sell me a magic mouse, also said may machine was probably running 12.7 os? But I have arthritis and been using trackpad's for 11 years.

I have seen threads stating a Magic Trackpad 2 will work with my iMac, but do apple still sell these?

MacTracker shows three Magic Trackpads: Magic Trackpad, Magic Trackpad 2, and Magic Trackpad (USB-C). As per Apple's description, the latter trackpad requires macOS 15.1 (Sequoia) or later.

Apple – Magic Trackpad (USB‑C) - White Multi-Touch Surface

A Mac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) cannot run anything later than macOS 11.* (Big Sur), and so does not satisfy that requirement. If you look at the detailed Compatibility list for the Magic Trackpad (USB-C), the only Macs on it are those with hardware model years of 2019 or later.

I think that it's really bad that Apple keeps cranking up minimum system requirements for input devices (keyboards, mice, trackpads), seeing as how those are items you might need to replace or upgrade on an older computer. But it is what it is.

MacTracker indicates that the Magic Trackpad 2 only required a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with El Capitan or better, so if you could find one of those somewhere (Apple discontinued them in October 2024), it would work with your Mac.

See the following from: Magic Trackpad (USB‑C) - White Multi-Touch Surface - Apple

System Requirements

Mac with macOS 15.1 or later

iPad with iPadOS 18.1 or later

Apple Vision Pro with the latest version of visionOS

The same requirements for macOS 15.1 or later apply the current Magic Mouse.

Apple no longer sells earlier models. For the mouse there are 3rd party alternatives but I don't know about the trackpad.

what the AI said

"Yes, a 2014 Mac will work with the Magic Trackpad 3, but it requires macOS 10.11 or later. The Magic Trackpad 3 connects via Bluetooth 4.0, so older Macs should work fine with it as long as they meet the operating system requirement. Reddit · r/macmini

Details:

  • Operating System: The Magic Trackpad 3 needs a Mac with at least macOS 10.11 (El Capitan).
  • Bluetooth: It uses Bluetooth 4.0 for connectivity.
  • Compatibility: Older Macs with El Capitan or later will be compatible, including the 2014 Mac model.
  • Potential Issues: While it should work, some users have reported that older Macs might experience slightly reduced battery life due to the Bluetooth version.

Also in AI's defense some of my posts are hallucinations.

I don't know about the current Trackpad but when the current Magic Mouse was released, there was no indication of a macOS 15.1 or later system requirement. Then posts here started to appear indicate that it would bluetooth connect with earlier macOS versions but people were having scrolling issues. I think I have also seen posts about it not working with Windows computers. Eventually the "System Requirement" section was added to the Apple Store listing for the mouse. With that said, I don't have a clue how or why it doesn't work as you describe "one size fits all."

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm going to try the latest Trackpad, if it doesn't function as required I'll take it back and rethink.

I looked on Amazon for a Trackpad 2 but they're asking a much higher price for that version,( which are

refurbs), presumably because there's a demand since Apple stopped selling them last year.
