After migration—How to interrupt iCloud to use Time Machine on new computer

Hi,

I'm helping my daughter migrate from an old iMac to a new one. The Migration has gone well, but the new iMac won't let me back up with Time Machine because iCloud is transferring files. See message below.

How can I suspend the iCloud backup, which can go on for days, it seems, and do a TM backup? I don't want her to go for days without a backup.

Thanks!

Be very careful.

There is no iCloud backup involved in this process. Macs cannot be backed up to iCloud. What is involved is an iCloud sync, which is updating the Mac with information from iCloud.

Heed the advice in the warning you posted - keep the Mac connected to power using a good Wi-Fi source (no VPN, no anti-virus) while relatively activity free until the sync completes.
