On newest iPad, no way to find Pages file using text from the file itself

Greetings. Again.

I recently bought an iPad, and I had trouble with Pages not saving my work (already posted another thread about this.)

Now, just to ensure that I am not hallucinating and to exclude the possibility that I had for example duplicated the file I was working on, I tried Spotlight. After being unsuccessful at locating any files including the word I know I recently added to the file, I decided to check if Spotlight actually works.

I searched a random word from the Pages document ("unnecessary") and searched the word in Spotlight, and guess what: Spotlight won't find the file!

The file exists and includes the word. Also, Pages is indeed included in the apps that Spotlight can search. I tried to exclude it and include it again. But the results just won't include that file!

I have tried with other words that are in the document: "business", "project", and even "for". None of them will help Spotlight find the file.

What am I doing wrong? Am I even the one doing things wrong?

Attaching 2 screenshots:

1) the word in the file

2) the activated app in Spotlight searches

I would also add a screenshot of the results in Spotlight but it includes emails so I hope you guys trust me on this one. It gives Top Hits (the definition of the word as fetched online) , then Websites, Siri Knowledge, Mail, Dictionary. Then it finally shows "Search in Apps", but it only lists App Store and Maps.

I'm so confused... any help will be highly appreciated!

I have no issue finding the word noumena or noumena in a Pages v14.4 document on iOS 18.6. You probably didn't, but quotes should not be part of a Spotlight search.

I have three Pages documents with the word noumena in each. Noumena is underlined in the first document and not underlined in the subsequent two.

I have the following in Settings > Search:

  • Show Recent searches - on
  • Show Related Content - off
  • Help Apple Improve Search - on
  • Pages >
    • Show App in Search - on
    • Show Content in Search - on

Thank you for running a test, I appreciate that very much.

It would explain why "unnecessary" (without quotes) specifically is not being found, but I tried with other words from the document, including obviously present ones like "for". Spotlight simply ignores that file.

For example, searching for "for", Spotlight lists results from other apps first, and when I tap on "Show in App" it will finally show Pages results - but not the file I'm looking for (the one where "unnecessary" is also present.)

Could the problem be in the file itself?

Could that have anything to do with the fact that Pages deleted changes I made to the document a couple of days ago (separate thread started, desperately trying to find those changes back...)

I'm genuinely baffled and deeply annoyed, but I'll keep trying to figure out how this machine works.

I did not include the quotes either in the search or in the Pages document. I simply used them in my response to you.

Assuming you never turned on “Change Tracking” in your Pages document, Pages does not remember change tracking or versions. Files does remember versions, so you might hold down the document icon in Files and choose “Versions” for additional information.

Might you have some other issue affecting versions, such as storing the file in iCloud with insufficient iCloud storage?

Finally:

searching for "for", Spotlight lists results from other apps first, and when I tap on "Show in App" it will finally show Pages results - but not the file I'm looking for (the one where "unnecessary" is also present.)

This works for me … but admittedly the app that appears is Files, not Pages.
