Logic Pro: Last selected audio interface is not available (and set to system)

Scenario: I am using Logic Pro with my AirPods as the output (and input) device. The Output and Input devices are set to System Setting.

When I close the AirPods, I get this message and then it sets the output device to another device (not System Setting).

When I click on Open Settings, Logic Pro changes the default to the above device (but not staying as System Setting) as such:

You would think that if it is set to System Setting, Logic Pro's Output Device should stay on System Setting and use the new default device. Input device stays on System Setting as expected.

One would also think on System Setting there should be no prompt for this, and if anything a system notification should pop up saying the new default is ...

There doesn't appear to be a UI fix for this, not one I could see. So just wanted to document this frustration for a future bug fix. Otherwise as a new user, this is quite a neat app and have enjoyed learning it.

This is not a bug, as Shane pointed out, it's normal Mac OS behavior.

What devices do you listed under the Speaker icon in the Mac menu bar?

The confusion is that the Speaker icon setting is the "System Setting", whatever it's set to, and Logic Pro provides independent I/O control. You can find yourself going back and forth changing devices between those 2 places.

Have you tried setting both Output Device and Input Device in Logic Pro to System Setting?

Then use the Speaker icon in the Mac menu bar to change output device so you don't have to keep switching it within Logic Pro.

At some point, you must have used a USB Microphone Input Device and it's been remembered.

If you're no longer using it, go into Audio MIDI Setup and remove from the list of Audio Devices.

Hope that helps.

Symantecs aside, it is a bug. System Setting should stay System Setting and whatever the OS decides would be what Logic Pro uses (if it were continuing to honor "system setting", which it clearly doesn't). If I change the output device in the system to something else, Logic Pro by this setting would not honor the system setting, making it a bug since Logic Pro is straying from the setting, not the OS.
