Is there a way to make a song on my playlist louder?

Hi all,

I now have several songs on my playlist that don't play at the same volume that they used to. So, instead of searching for and replacing and existing song on my playlist, I first have a question:

Is there a way to make a song play naturally louder without having to use the volume controls?

Thanks, Mark

PS I am leaving at 3PM PST but will be back on Monday.

Two additional options:

  1. Go into Preferences > Playback and select Sound Check - it's supposed to play all songs at the same level. Does not seem to work on songs transferred to iPhone though.
  2. Get a freeware program called MP3Gain. Put all your music through it and it will normalize everything to the same level. (Despite the name, it does also work on M4A as well as MP3.)

OK, I tried Edit/Preferences/Playback/Sound Check but it didn't work. Then, I downloaded MP#Gain but I can't get it to run. Since I am using Windows 11 it gave me a fix instead, and even that wouldn't run. I am using Windows 11 with Chrome for a browser, and my iTunes is up to date. Here's as far as I can get:

Perhaps I did something wrong. Could you provide some simple steps?

I am on Windows 10 and it works great for me. I don't think there should be a problem to run it on Windows 11.

However, it looks like you are using version 1.5.2, while the highest version available is 1.2.5. The version of 1.5.2 appears to be a command-line version, not a Windows interface.

Uninstall/delete whatever you downloaded then...

This is the official download site:

https://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/download.php

Get the first one in the list (unless you don't already have Visual Basic, then get the third one).

As noted at the top of that page, you will also need AACGain (to fix M4A files).

Once installed, you just drag songs from iTunes directly onto the icon on your Desktop, or into the program window if it is already open. You can do Track Analysis if you're curious about how loud the original files are, or just click on Track Gain to automatically transform all of the files in the list.

turingtest2 suggests your files are in the cloud ... I don't know if MP3Gain will work on cloud files, but I would guess not. But the files will retain the changes so if you download them, transform them, then re-upload them, it should work.

Hi OriginalSaladGoat!

Hope you're having a good day!

Yes, turingtest2 is right in that the song I originally posted this thread about DOES have a cloud icon. Not sure about the other dozen or so songs that do this but I will check. Also, I did download the Official MP3Gain file you sent me, and I used the one that said it was most used. Unfortunately I don't know how to drag a song onto this file. Everytime I tried the song shows me a red circle with a diagnal line thru it and it won't appear in the MP3Gain file (pictured).

Hi OriginalSaladGoat,

Sorry, but could you explain that further? I am not really clear on what you mean.

Instead, is there a way to get a song out of the cloud? I am thinking that if I could do that then I could do what turingtest2 had said to do. I noticed that only my cloud songs are grayed out as I had said above.

Thanks for all of your help,

Mark

To OriginalSaladGoat and turingtest2,

While waiting for a reply it appears that I fixed the problem and made the song in question (as well as the dozen others) louder. For future refference I was able to remove the cloud icon from my original playlist and then use turingtest2's above sugestion to make the song louder. Here's what I did:

First, I highlighted the song. Then I right clicked on the song and selected "Add To Playlist" which has an arrow to see menu options like "A Playlist" etc. I then clicked on the top, first "A Playlist" and the cloud on my original playlist disappeared. Then, I right clicked the song on my original playlist again and selected "Song Info" and then "Options". In the options tab the "Volume Adjust" slide bar was now visible so I increased the volume and the song now plays louder.

After that I tested it to see if anything had changed by playing the last couple of seconds of the song before it, and it went to the song in question like it was supposed to. I also did the same thing by playing the last couple of seconds of the song I had adjusted and it advanced to the next song like it should too. Finally, I went to 'A Playlist" again and deleted the song I had just put there. Doing that did not affect the same song on my original playlist.

So it looks lke this problem is solved! Thank you so much OriginalSaladGoat and turingtest2 for offering your advice which actually helped me solve this problem. So bye for now and take care!
