Do I need an apple tv subscription to buy a boxset on apple tv?

I have an Apple TV box plugged into my TV that I use for streaming. I did have a free trial of Apple TV+ but didn’t renew it as I wasn’t using it much, but there’s a boxset I’d like to buy that’s available on Apple TV+ and not on Amazon or anywhere else.

Do I need to sign up for an Apple TV+ subscription to buy this box set and watch it on the TV? Or can I just buy and watch it on the TV without one?

  • The Apple Media Store (formerly iTunes Store) items [buy-shows] do not require a subscription, nor would that benefit in any way. This would not be Apple TV+ (some third party websites mislabel that). The ‘Plus’ is about the subscription streaming service only.
  • The Apple TV+ subscription content cannot be purchased.
