How to manage Apple Music files on Mac for accurate tracking?

When Music plays the last track of a playlist or album, it does not update the play count.

All my music is stored on my MacBook Air as mp3 or m4a files

I have noticed elsewhere that this bug has been around for a few years but I have never noticed until now.

How on earth does this bug still exist, it must be a simple fix?
