Which iMac do you have? That will determine if, and how far, you can upgrade macOS.

Identify your iMac model - Apple Support

You may want to review the "If you don't see an update links" in Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support . It looks like you'd need an iMac with a hardware model year of 2019 or later to upgrade to Sonoma or Sequoia.

For macOS 26 (Tahoe), which Apple will be releasing this fall, the only iMacs that will qualify are those released in 2020 and later. (See: OS - macOS Tahoe 26 - Apple.)
