M1 Mac Mini and Epson 2450 scanner communication problem

My setup: M1 Mac Mini running on Ventura 13.6.3 and an Epson Perfection 2450 scanner.

I recently moved and when I hooked up my computer setup, I haven’t been able to make scans using the Image Capture software. The scanner was working fine before my move. I’ve tried all the usual remedies as follows:

1) Restart computer and scanner

2) Unplug and re-plug the scanner

3) Confirmed USB connection

4) Updated the driver: ICA Scanner Driver v5.8.23 for Apple's Image Capture utility.

5) Deleted the scanner from “System Settings,” and then re-added

When I open the scanner using Image Capture or through “System Settings,” everything seems to be initially working, I hear the usual clicking and motion sounds and a message saying “scanner is warming up.” Then after a somewhat long time I get this message: “Overview scan timed out.” This is sometimes followed by this popup message: “Scanner reported an error.” I’ve attached screen shot images of what I’m seeing.

I’m guessing it’s some type of communication error. I hope someone can help me and offer a solution. I realize I may have to break down and purchase the VueScan software, but I’d really prefer not to pay for another yearly software subscription. All help, insights and advice will be greatly appreciated!

Thanking in advance, David

I finally got my scanner working!  I wrote to VueScan and got the following reply from Ed Hamrick: "Some people have had success using an old USB 2.0 hub, because some older scanners have problems with USB 3.0 ports."

That did the trick although I have to admit I didn't expect it to work.  Thanks again for your replies!
