Using external DVD Drive with 2019iMac

I suggest looking at the Pioneer optical drives ... the BDR-XD08S is a nice one. I have its predecessor the XD07S and it works perfectly.

OWC also has good drives, suggest considering the 6X OWC Slim. Similar price & features to the Pioneer unit.

Note - these are bus-powered drives, which are generally fine for reading/playing discs ... but if you expect to burn disks you should get the associated power supply.

The Apple Suiperdrive is a very poor choice in this day and age. I strongly recommend a self powered, drawer loading optical drive such as this one from OWC (MacSales.com): OWC Mercury Pro USB 3.2 (5Gb/s) 24X Super-Multi DVD/CD Burner/Reader External Optical Drive with M-DISC Support

I got an older model of this unit for ripping audiobooks. It is a work horse and is fast. I've burned a couple of DVDs and CDs but use the slowest speed for a better burn. It's an excellent unit.

OWC is considered the premier 3rd party hardware provider for Macs.

Just some food for thought.

Most any after-market USB DVD/CD Optical Drive will work with Mac's.

I have a couple of LG DVD/CD portable drives that work fine with my Intel and Silicone Mac mini's.

I have the same Mac. I use a Samsung drive and works great. Most drives should work fine. However, with my Mac Mini M4 I use the Pioneer BDR-X13U-S which also handles Blu-ray DVD's (assuming you have a Blu-Ray app)

if you want a apple brand DVD/CD player the apple superdrive is good choice (although its discontinued) see: 256088940 theres also good options on Amazon as well
