safari "preview in new tab" missing for documents

If I work in microsoft edge, I can preview pdfs instead of downloading them. It asks me "What do you want to do with XYUZ.doc?" and then I can choose "Open" and can view it in a new tab.

This is no longer / not available in Safari...I know I used to be able to: "View document in new tab" instead of downloading. Now I cannot. "Preferences" is now called "Settings"

I have a 2017 MacBook Pro, Mac OS Ventura 13.7.7, Safari 18.6.

In Settings, I can change if I am asked before downloading a pdf, but I am unable to preview it in the Safari Browser in a new Tab: there is only a blank page.

This is so frustrating with things like bank documents. Sometimes it's advertising, sometimes it's really important. I'm tired of having to download each message from my bank, then open the pdf to see if it is important or not. I have decided to use Edge in the meantime, because there I can control my life better there.

I've searched the different community pages but all were closed on this theme. Why? I don't know.

Thanks for any feedback...and maybe I'll come back to Safari.

Regards,

Lisa
