How does apple Podcasts work? New user

I decided to listen to a podcast. I went to the episode and hit play. So far, it played 3 commercials. Then played 10 seconds of the show and then 3 more commercials. Is that normal?

I'm still listening and now the show finally starts.

Is Apple Podcasts paid? Am I supposed to buy a subscription of something? I don't see info but maybe I missed it.

maybe. Depends on how the podcast funds itself. Many have commercials or underwriting of some kind.

No. Apple aggregates podcast feeds for end user use. Some podcasts offer subscriptions of some kind, but most do not.

OK, I see that once it started the second time, no more commercials. So, I guess the commercials are built into the podcast and inserted by Apple. But I would still like a pointer to an overview.

My understanding is that I might be able to subscribe to individual podcasts and pay to avoid commercials? As you can see this is new to me.
