Emptying Trash gets hung up with files both on iCloud and local

My iCloud was getting full so I am trying to delete extraneous files. Here is what happens:

  • Identify a block of files to delete and issue "Move to Trash"
  • if the system gets hung up on a file (why?) the Emptying Trash says "Moving Y items to Trash. Items to delete: x files. Then hangs forever. I have left it overnight to see what happens. Nothing.

Solution: Open Activity Monitor.

  • Force Quit Finder
  • Try again. Then it works. The select next block of files.
  • Repeat.

REALLY?

Why can the Trash not delete these files whether they are local or on iCloud?

Have a complaint about iCloud too but that is another entry.

Thank you. I had accidentally turned on iCloud for Documents which filled my basic iCloud account, and caused this sync interaction. There was no way I wanted my files on the iCloud. Turning that off was easier than I thought - had to copy all files back to my desktop/documents folders, but that did not take too long. Doing a backup to remote storage now and hopefully everything will work as normal.

Many of us prefer to do things our own way, yet that may not be the way Apple's sync system is set up to work.

Eg: You may have settings in place that retain deleted files, keeping them accessible for up to 30 days, unless permanently deleted across all devices that are in sync...

Files in sync delete everywhere they are in sync. Eg: Delete from Mac they delete in iCloud & vice versa.

Delete files in iCloud Drive on iCloud.com

Files you delete from iCloud Drive are recoverable for 30 days, but you can remove deleted files before the 30-day time period is up. See Recover deleted files on iCloud.com

Note: Files in the Recently Deleted folder don’t count toward your iCloud storage.

Apple Support's article provides it's own recommendations for creating more space: through file deletion.
