Successfully setting up Apple TV through an AVR

Haven’t owned a television set for over forty years, largely because of poor reception. Now that streaming has solved that problem, I’m trying to build a basic set up using Apple TV and as much of my older stereo equipment as possible before spending too extravagantly on components I may not really need or do not fully understand (a long, long list!)

I also want to cleanly combine this with being able to play vinyl and CD music, FM and DVDs.

Components on hand: Audio Technica turntable, Insignia “fire” TV, a pair of vintage Boston Acoustics A100 speakers, a pair of Polk TS100 bookshelf speakers, a Polk T30 center speaker and a Polk wireless subwoofer (PSWi225). The receiver is a Denon AVR-S570BT and it can handle all of these “wired” speakers if desired and/or necessary, along with a 2nd subwoofer.

The installation is in the basement, in the corner of an “L” shaped, large room.

That’s it.

I have, I thou ght, achieved workability several times, only to find, the next time I power up, that there are things I musta done wrong. I’d really appreciate suggestions of any of the things I should check … specific settings, connections, sequence of actions, interference from other remotes, etc, all with my sincere thanks in advance.

If you connect like:

Apple TV box →[HDMI]→ AV receiver →[HDMI eARC]→ TV,

then set Apple TV for Audio Output: “TV Speakers” (= over HDMI),

and set the TV to output audio to the receiver.

Let us know how that goes.

[Setting a direct connection to the receiver in Apple TV settings, will be temporary and of lesser quality (stereo) (Bluetooth or AirPlay: not HDMI).]
