Apple does not have an official recommendation.

This is what I'm using with my current Mac.

Other World Computing – 24X OWC Mercury Pro USB 3.2 (5Gb/s) Super-Multi DVD/CD Burner/Reader External Optical Drive with M-DISC Support

This is a desktop drive that comes with its own power supply. Advantages:

  • The power supply and the USB 3.0 B to USB-A cable are both detachable and replaceable.
  • Since the drive has its own power supply, it doesn't have problems with being plugged into a hub or dock, the way that the Apple USB SuperDrive did. It also doesn't want to tie up two USB ports (the way that some other bus-powered drives do).
  • The drive is tray-loading and the tray appears to have an indent for standard round mini-CDs (of the type that record companies once sold CD Singles on).

Disadvantages:

  • The included USB 3.0 B to USB-A cable is very short. You'd probably want to get a longer USB 3.0 B to USB-C cable or USB 3.0 B to USB-A cable right away.

I’m not aware of any published recommendations.

You will want to ask Apple Support directly, as they are the official source of official answers.

Pretty much any reputable CD DVD drive should work. I’ve been using an ancient Compaq drive, with a USB-A connector and an external power adapter.

The now-retired SuperDrive works as well, but for (USB-C connections) absolutely needs an adapter that can provide enough power.

I recommend this self powered, drawer loading, optical drive from OWC (MacSales.com): OWC Mercury Pro USB 3.2 (5Gb/s) 24X Super-Multi DVD/CD Burner/Reader External Optical Drive with M-DISC Support

I have an older model of the same drive for ripping audiobooks and it has outstanding performance.

OWC is considered the premier 3rd party hardware supper for Macs. They stand behind their warranties and have excellent customer support.
