I just triggered a warning on my MAC saying my computer has been locked because of illegal activity involving identity theft. With instructions to call Apple Support immediately. Is this a scam?

You didn't trigger anything. Either a site intentionally displayed a lie as a popup, or you received a lie via email or a text.
