No red badge notifications for iPad updates

Why are we no longer getting a red dot badge notification when there is a security patch update in the settings app. Example: today I decided to check in settings, general, software update just out of interest and sitting there was an update to be downloaded for 18.6 on iPad Air M3 2025 that I had no idea it was there or for how long. The same problem was also on my iPad Air 3rd gen and iPad Pro 2nd gen. So here I had 3 iPads still getting these security updates without any notification at all. I then googled it and it said iPad Air M3 was not set to do this and the instructions they gave for the other two said to go to settings, notifications, settings app and turn the option on. But surprise, surprise, there is no settings app in notifications to turn on. The two older iPads always showed the red badge in settings to update but this was the first time I have had an update in the new M3. Is there some other way now of advising we have new updates to be downloaded and installed and if so can you please advise.

many thanks

liz

The update badge will typically be seen some days after release of a System Software update. Apple's global network of update servers have finite capacity - and cannot service the entirety of deployed devices at the same time. After the initial spike pf update requests has passed, Apple will notify broad availability using the update notification badge - regionally and by batch.

Keeping your iPad updated with essential security updates is strongly advised - however, experience demonstrates that it isn't always a good idea to be among the first to install system software updates immediately upon release, in particular for critical devices upon which you rely.

Whilst unusual, it is not unheard of for a system software update to cause unexpected or serious issues with some models of iPad - a recent example of a "bad" update being iPadOS 17.7.7 causing major difficulties for owners of iPad Pro 10.5". The "update" was subsequently suspended pending development of a fix. For those that had already installed the bad update, it was many days before a further update was released to address the issues caused - during which affected devices were all but unusable.

For devices upon which you have critical reliance, it is perhaps advisable to wait for just a day-or-two to ensure that no unforeseen issues are identified with an update. Truly critical updates, that should be applied immediately, are independently pushed to devices using a Security Response updates (that can be enabled or disabled in update settings).

Thanks heaps. This was never the case so it means our updates could be sitting there for up to a week plus and we have no idea. I rely on this red badge to tell me to get my act together and update. Seems like Apple need to get their act together and get the badge to its customers as soon as the update is dropped into our devices. Very slack on their part. Who cares about the badge after the horse has bolted. Thanks again.
