iCloud folder is taking forever to load

Today, when I booted up my computer, iCloud asked me to authorize my profile all over again. Ever since, iCloud photos and drive have been acting incredibly slow, such that it takes upwards of 2 minutes just to enter a single folder. I've restarted my computer multiple times - but I'm afraid of disabling iCloud in fear of losing my photos.
