How can I reset an older Mac mini without a wired mouse?

Even with the current crop of bluetooth connected iMac keyboards and mice, it's a good idea to keep an inexpensive set of wired USB keyboard and mouse on hand, not only for a situation such as this, but for other similar situations which might require one to access recovery mode or troubleshoot some other problem. If you never use it, consider yourself lucky. But when you need it, you'll have it.

A USB set can be had for less than $20 at Amazon. This, for example: Logitech MK120 Wired USB Keyboard and Mouse Combo - Amazon.

The keyboard doesn't have to be Mac specific, even a PC keyboard will do.

Unfortunately a wired mouse is required. Some are under $10. Any USB mouse would do, unless it is designated as needing special drivers from the manufacturer. Call around your neighborhood school or library. They might let you borrow one.

You can try using the terminal commands `resetpassword` or `resetpassword -u username` to reach the password reset utility, which may enable you to wipe your Mac mini without the need for a wired mouse.

Recovery mode offers a whole set of options. From rebuilding the OS, to resetting the MacOS password, to evaluating and repairing the health of your hard drive.

Please note, though backing up is something you do after you have booted the system. And make sure the backup is good. You never know when the drive will fail.
