iTunes sync issues after trying trial Music

I have a Mini Mac M2 running Sequoia 15.5 and an iPhone 16 Pro Max running iOS 18.5. Everything is updated. I sync using the finder and I have several tracks that appear to be on iPhone, but then they don't play. In a playlist, if you select them, another song plays. If try to select them individually, they don't play. Meanwhile, all songs work fine using the iTunes/Music app on my Mini Mac.

This all took place after trying (and passing on) the Apple Music trial. Coincidence?

If you used "Sync Music" when you had that Apple Music subscription, some of the songs on your iPhone might be "iCloud Music Library" copies of songs from your Mac. Copies that don't work any more now that you have ended your subscription. Copies that, perhaps, should have been deleted automatically, but, for whatever reason, weren't.

Someone else on these forums reported a similar problem and I suggested that they try this:

  • Do a manual synchronization with NO music selected on the Mac, in order to remove all music from the iPhone – including any "iCloud Music Library" songs that the phone may have failed to remove or overwrite on its own.
  • Select the songs that one wants on the iPhone and then do another manual synchronization to load them.

That person posted back to say that it had worked for them.
