Missing red badge for unread messages on iPhone

The little red badge for messages won’t show up, even if I have unread messages.

I have really been struggling with no sound and badges after 18.6 update. I have spent a week trying to figure this out. Here's what finally worked for me. Settings/Notifications/Messges/Custom Notifications - Turn ON Unknown Senders. I also Turned OFF Notification Grouping but don't think that really mattered.

Did you already force restart your iPhone after the latest update?

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

Also make sure, that in Settings/Notifications/Messges/Alerts, "Badges" is still enabled.
