Music Library Items get duplicated on MacBook SSD

Hi all, a while ago my Music library started to misbehave when I added new titles to it. I get some error message telling me the library cannot be updated at the moment. Going into settings and disabling library sync and then turning it back on solves the problem and the library can be updated again. However, Apple music seems to duplicate all songs in my library that were imported into it after a certain date. I only noticed this behavior when my SSD ran out of space, as the songs only appear once in the Music app library even thogh there are multiple copies on the SSD (in ~Music>Media>Music). I can delete them manually from the SSD via Finder, but they get duplicated again when the library cannot be updated error reoccurs. What is the reason for this odd behavior and how can I fix this. Deleting hundreds of songs is quite laborious.
