Get Apple Watch to prioritize bluetooth?

I have an Ultra 2 and iPhone 16. Latest updates on both. The iPhone is my source for music and it's connected to the car via a bluetooth dongle. I'd get in, the phone connects to Bluetooth, and I can press play on the watch before setting off. This all worked great until sometime recently....I'd look and the watch would have music it wants to play that isn't in my current playlist. Sometimes, not on my phone at all. It took a LONG time and a lot of posts here to figure out what the problem is.

At some point, it appears Apple decided that when I have my phone and watch it wants to default to airplay instead. So instead of opening music and selecting 'Play' I have to:

  1. select music
  2. select three dots
  3. select airplay
  4. select control other
  5. select iPhone.

(Or I pull my phone out of my pocket and press play there... kinda makes being able to use the watch useless)

I've removed the Now Playing app. I've set airplay handoff to never. My watch has never had music on it, and never will. It kinda seems like there really isn't anything that I can do to stop this. Is there anything I'm missing? All I want is for the play button to work when I get in the car.

(I tend to think there isn't anything that can be done here... but maybe if there's enough upvotes that Apple might add an option to set bluetooth as a default)
