How can I get to recovery mode for IMac when using external screen

I have an iMac 21.5" (late 2013) and its monitor is not working. I have attached an external monitor Phillips monitor and it works when I log in normally. However I need to do a factory reset. When I tried to go to recovery mode by pressing keys Command-R it displays a grey screen on the external display but nothing happens after that. How can I get my external display to show the disk utility menu so I can do the reinstallation from recovery mode?

I don’t think Recovery supports that.

Use Target Disk Mode and use a cable and another Mac to get a backup, if that’s where this is headed.

Alternatively, install macOS on a bootable device, and (try to) boot that, on the off chance the storage has failed.

Or get the iMac repaired.

Wipe the internal storage using Target Disk Mode.

Make absolutely certain you aim the erase operation at the correct disk.

Apple will recycle old hardware for free, as another option.
