Add an contact account and choose to sync only the contacts (exclude mail, calendar, notes)

Set the new account to be the default for new contacts

Add a test contact and confirm it syncs up to the account

-Reset the password on the account so the contacts no longer sync.

-No notification is sent that the contacts are not syncing.

-Add several contacts

-All the newly added contacts are now in "limbo", saved to the "default" account but NOT actually synced to the account.

-Open Settings - Apps - Contacts - accounts - tap into the account and tap sign in with the new password to reactivate the sync.

and.....

-Contacts will sync down to the iphone from the account however the limbo contacts that were added when the account was not signed in will not upload. Instead they will be ERASED from the iphone
