What do you mean by 'sync is not working'?
What kind of account is the mailbox in? iCloud? Gmail? Exchange? something else?
If it's IMAP (almost all are nowadays), then the mail is stored on the server and should, inherently, be in sync because that's how IMAP is designed.
If it's an older POP account then you're in a world of hurt since POP was never designed to be synched across devices.
