The background on my imac is black and I cannot access system settings. In addition applications like pages has ground to a halt and when I put a usb stick drive in it does not recognise it. internet browsers while slow to load initially then work as normal.

No you don't have to purchase Etrecheck to get the Share menu to work. When you click on hit you should get a drop down menu of which is Copy Report.

Try running the following command in the Terminal app while booted into macOS normally or in Safe Mode:
sudo find ~ -not -user "$(id -u)" -ls
This command will prompt you for your admin password. Nothing will appear on the screen as you type it, so press the "Return" key to submit the password.
I highly recommend you copy & paste this command so you don't accidentally mistype it since a mistyped character (including a space) can have unknown consequences.
This command will search your home folder for any items which are not owned by you and list those items along with the permissions for each item. You do need to give the Terminal app Full Disk Access or you will end up with a lot of items where you don't have permission to access. There should be very few items that are owned by another user such as "root" or "system". I'm thinking the Library folder or some items in the Library folder don't have the correct permissions.
