iMessage activation error: 'An error occurred during activation' on iPhone

First I checked with my carrier to see if international messages are enabled (for imessage activation) and then spent 2 hours with apple support, with no luck. After searching apple community forum I found this and it helped.

1) Go to settings > mobile service

2) Select your sim

3) Tap "My Number"

4) Erase everything so that the input field is empty

5) Tap "Save"

After that, the SIM card seemed to "reboot" and automatically update its number, after which everything worked and the number appeared everywhere and imessage started to work.

before that I checked every possible setting with apple support and everything seemed fine. But the problem was that I manually inserted mobile number in “My number” field ehich was why imessage failed to activate.
