Perhaps the best way is to use the app Image Capture that's in your iMac's Applications folder. It will show all the pictures on your phone and let you save them where you want.
Well, the BEST way is to use iCloud Photos so that all your phone's pictures are automatically synced to your Mac, and then save them from there. But it costs $3/month or so, depending on the space you need.
Does one of these work for you?
You could ask OWC if they think the drive they sold you is capable of operating that way. Their technical support folks are pretty savvy.
If you want to stay here, it would help if you told us a bit more:
Is this external hard drive an SSD or a classic "spinning rust" HDD?
Do you know how it is formatted?
What connector/cable does it use to connect to your iMac?
What macOS level does your iMac run?
FWIW I can share images and movies from iPad Photos to OWC SSD Envoy Pro Mini connected to iPad's USB-C port.
I was really hoping to find a way to transfer photos from my iphone directly to my OWC external drive via the right cable. I went to the Apple Store and he said they didn’t offer such a cable at the store.

Yeah, I'm so way happier with the USBc port on my iPhone 16! You can just plug in a low power SSD and it works like a champ. From Amazon:
It weighs 1 oz, and is really easy to pack with the iPad and MacBook. I also have a 4TB version that's just the same. (Well, more expensive!) With a Lightning adapter it ought to work with an iPhone 14, I think.
But not all drives can be powered by the iPhone, and I'm not sure at all about the iPhone 14's Lightening port providing enough power for a mechanical drive.
