delete messages contacts and groups on Mac

I cannot manage contacts in messages on the Mac - redundant contacts, groups, and messages are un-deletable, either in Messages or the Contacts app. I expire messages after 30 days, but the contacts live on as zombies that cannot be killed. Ideas?
