Music - Live updating of Smart Playlists stopped working since around the 15th of July 2025

When I, for instance, create a smart list with the 3 least recently played tracks, it doesn't update the tracks in that list after I played them. It does change the data of the song so it is recorded that it has been played. It's just the playlist that doesn't update. I have to open edit the rules and then close it again for the changes to take effect.

Since I rely on this feature very heavily, I get very annoyed having to constantly edit all of my Smart Playlists.

I presume it was probably an update that caused this bug. I never had this problem before. I hope other people can verify the same problem and hope that it can be fixed.

Kind regards,

Martin

Other things to try:

  • Hold down option as you launch Music then explicitly choose the .musiclibrary file that you want it to open. In some cases it appears Music can become connected to a cached version of the library that may then not update correctly.
  • Hold down both option+cmd as you launch Music to open it in its safe mode. This may perform some internal housekeeping, which in turn might help.
  • Turn Live Updating off for that playlist, apply and close, then edit the rules and turn Live Updating on again.
