When i tap return key, it sends message rather than inserts a blank row. I though the blue arrow was for sending messages

The blue arrow is how you send the message from the touchscreen. They return key is how you send it from the keyboard. You can add spaces to using the space bar. However, if you really need something formatted, I suggest you use email rather than Messages.
